Our year has culminated at the Welsh National Championship. Held this year at Wrexham University, it was a long trip and a massive thank you to all the parents who spent two days up North braving the sleet and snow (and lack of coffee!).
It was great to spend the evening with the judoka the night before and the behaviour of all our members was impeccable. The whole squad were a pleasure to coach and following their results have all been promoted to the Welsh Squad 2022. 👏👏👏
The day started off with Oliver Lewis in the Cadet boys u66kg, and it started with a bang! Oli stepped up with 3 ippon wins in his pool, including a first submission win, progressing to the semis, where he narrowly lost taking a Bronze. Ben Hughes was also in action in the Cadets u55kg and had a difficult group, after winning his round one bout with an excellent Sumi-Geashi for ippon. Ben saw the day out winning a bronze medal. Following the welsh open it was good to see the boys step up and win medals at this event.
Our Precadets were also in action, and first up was Cedric Davies in the u38s. Like Oli and Ben Cedric is a first year in his category, he built on recent performance to secure two wins by newaza ippon and two losses, ending the day with a Bronze.
Tomos Roberts was in action in the u50s (a new weight cat for him) and due to reduced numbers in the weight above ended up competing in 2 categories. In the combined group Tom fought through a knockout (no pools) to win Bronze, securing 2 wins by Tomoenage. Following this Tom was in the u50 category where he fought through to an experienced international playing in the final narrowly losing following a score being overturned on review.
Charlie O’Brien travelled up to support the squad and to experience the championship. Taking part in the post tournament welsh squad training. Unfortunately for Charlie he didn’t get the opportunity to showcase what we know he can do due to numbers in his weight, but nevertheless is now promoted to the Welsh Squad 2022.
A massive well done to you all… I can’t wait to see what we can achieve next year 😊
