Welsh International Open

Updated: Nov 10, 2021

Our competitive juniors were in action at the Welsh International Precadet and Cadet Open hosted at the National Sports Centre, Cardiff.

This is the highest level competition in Wales, with competitors from across the UK and Europe. Our squad competed over the both days with Ben and Oli competing in the Cadets and Cedrc, Iestyn and Tom in the Precadets.

Cadets

After competing at the C2 International last month and attending the GBR Cadet training camp in Scotland, Ben stepped up for his first level 4 event. Ben had some good attacking Judo, scoring with throws and showed strong newaza defence.

This was Oli‘s first competition since March 2020, and also his first experience of cadet level. He’s been training hard both at Judo Swansea and at the national Randori in Cardiff. Oli showed he can handle competing at this level with some strong attacks.

Both took away valuable experience and we look for to seeing how they develop in the cadets over the next year.

Precadets

After a busy month of training events and lower level competitions, this was the first international Precadet competition for our squad. We knew it would be tough! All the boys did themselves proud.

Iestyn came away with a Bronze after 3 very hard bouts against British Champions. Cedric ended on a 5th after a strong start lost in the semifinal. Tom ended 7th, drawing the eventual silver medalist in round 1 and narrowly missing the bronze, his newaza win was exceptional.

This event provided valuable experience for our team and for me as a coach… onto the next 😊
