New To Judo
For those new members below is a checklist to ensure you’ve got all you need ready to start in the dojo. What your child needs to be a Judoka:
• Completed Judo Swansea Membership Form
• Update the coaches immediately if any medical conditions develop
• Purchase a Welsh Judo Licence via https://welshjudo.com/ This Licence is your child insurance to train Judo and needs to be renewed annually, it will also stay with them as a record of all their Gradings and qualifications.
• Please ensure you select Judo Swansea as your club online so we can update your childs grade.
• “The kit” is called the Judogi or Gi. The size of judogi are measured by athlete height and start at 110cm.
• We sell Blitz Judogi and hold a small stock of these.
• Alternatively, we can recommend Fighting Films, we have secured a discount code that you can use on online at www.fightingfilms.com
Discount code is: JUDOSWAN15
We highly recommend measuring your child before ordering kits and you can phone the helpful sales line too.
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is extremely important to us at Judo Swansea. All our coaches have an enhanced DBS check and have completed the relevant Safeguarding qualifications with Sport Wales and UK Coaching. If you have any Safeguarding issues, you can raise them with any of the coaches. You can contact me by phone or email below. Also is the link to the WJA Safeguarding page with contact details of our current safeguarding area officers (Sam and Darren)

Development and Training
We at Judo Swansea will build your child’s development around modern competitive Judo. Central to our coaching will always be the Judo Moral Code:
Courtesy
To be polite to others
Courage
To face difficulties with bravery
Honesty
To be sincere with your thoughts and actions
Honour
To do what is right and stand by your principles
Modesty
To be without ego in your actions and thoughts
Respect
To appreciate others
Self Control
To be in control of your emotions
Friendship
To be a good companion and friend
Please look also at our Club Rules and Code of Conduct for members, participants, parents and guardians. Please read it with your child or summarise it for them.
For all Judoka, we want your child to have fun while learning Judo. It will be physically demanding with some emphasis on Randori (full contact sparing)
For Intermediate and Advanced Judoka, we will be focussing on your individual technical requirements, while building a framework of fundamental skills that will enable you to transition through the age and weight groups.
Gradings
We will run Gradings at regular intervals through the year, we will not grade judoka in between these events. We believe that the grading of a judoka signals a significant point in their development and each judoka deserves the opportunity and space to showcase their skills. The Gradings will be assessed, and promotions are not guaranteed and will rarely be more than 1 or 2 “mons”. Mons are the intervals of grade from 1-18, and each belt consists of 3 mons.
Our Grading System mirrors the guidelines set out by the WJA/BJA in terms of age and competition experience. As a guide below is the target grade for each age group;
Under 8s – Dragon Grades
Age 9-12 – 1st to 6th Mon
Age 13-16- 7th to 18th Mon
