British Teams Championship

After a three year absence, the British Teams Championship was back with a bang!

If you’ve never experienced the national teams let me tell you it’s like being in a stadium on cup final day. The chanting, cheering, booing, sledging going on from the players, crowd and sometimes the officials is a thing of wonder.

As the chants of “Let’s go London, let’s go” rung out during the finals our players got to see British Judo at its best. The rivalry, camaraderie and sportsmanship coupled with high level attacking judo performed by world class senior judoka like Mckenzie, Renicks and Awiti-Alcatraz with the upcoming cadets and juniors, all putting everything on the line for their Team.

Our precadets were a little overwhelmed with the environment, but they took it on the chin and embraced the day as a whole. They had a tough pool drawing Team Scotland who ended the day with a bronze and Team London who took gold. A few wins for Team Wales against Team Western was a silver lining to end their competitive day. As a club and coaching team we are really proud of Cedric, Charlie and Tom representing Wales for the first time. The first of many we’re sure!

The more experienced Cadet & Junior Welsh Team, still with mainly 1st and 2nd year Cadets, made an impressive start to their day against Team Midlands. They drew the larger pool with 5 teams, including this years gold medalist Team NHC. After multiple wins in each round they came away with two team wins ending their day in 5th place. Building on his recent performances, Ben came away with two wins by ippon.

A massive thank you to the Welsh Judo coaches for all their hard work on the day and to Samurai Kidderminster for hosting this prestigious event.
